Dave is still busy during that time trying to find an important phone pointer for a miserable young CEO while Maddy is considering an offer to sell the agency to a new competitor that could reflect everything.

It didn't take Nostradamus to predict that Willis had a future as a movie star, just as it's apparent that Shepherd's glory days were behind her.... Nevertheless, the show hits its stride in the second season.
