It is a series of wonderful comedic events presented by a newspaper writer in order to accept the idea of his wife's death, which seems surprisingly sexy. The series begins with Tony trying to accept the death of his wife and trying to adopt a new rude character in an attempt to expel those who are by his side and try to help him in any way, especially as Tony is behaving strangely.
Gervais has given us an affecting series, populated with a collection of fine characters, ably played. It doesn't always hit home, but when it does it is something special.
Gervais the actor is failed by the writer and not shown to best advantage by the director. The performance isn't enough, and its strengths underline the inadequacies found elsewhere.
