The series centers on awkward web designer Stuart, an Englishman who relocates to Los Angeles in search of sunshine, VIP parties and maybe even the woman of his dreams. However, the awkward Stuart keeps running into situations that more often than not, have him not connecting with women.
Merchant goes solo with Hello Ladies and the result is a series that would have been a whole lot funnier if the cringe-worthy comedy conceit didn't feel completely played out.
Merchant doesn't have something to offer. He's proven time and again to have a spot-on wit and flawless delivery, and hopefully Hello Ladies lives up to his legacy.
If Gervais' antics in The Office and Extras struck your funny bone in a positive way, you might find Merchant's first big Ricky-free foray to be a towering comedy achievement.
Fans of Merchant's usual schtick will find much to like, but this brand of cringe comedy has grown dated and predictable. Still, the lanky funnyman has terrific comic timing and delivery, and the show gets a pass. Just.
