The film tells the story of struggling inexperienced attorney Rudy Baylor who takes on a huge fraudulent Insurance company to fight for a woman whose insurance company will not pay for an operation that could save their son's life.
The overbearing soundtrack, unimaginative cinematography, and indulgently tear-jerking ending ... this all adds up to a surprisingly derivative movie from Coppola.

Reeling Reviews
It's an intelligent film that doesn't cater to the usual eye-candy we face during the holiday season and is one of the best adaptations of a Grisham novel.
Grisham and Coppola (who also adapted the story for the screen) attempt to show us a piece of life, and though the lesson is a bit heavy-handed at times, it does capture the fact that things just don't always work out perfectly in the end.
Coppola has never been particularly known for his comic touch, but here he seems bent on leavening the melodrama with as many laughs as possible, and they are generally honest and well-earned.

Coppola adapted the novel himself, and he's done a good job of paring it down.
Coppola has infused The Rainmaker with enough humor, character, honest emotion and storytelling style to make it one of the year's most entertaining movies.
