Nero is a Romulan, the captain of the mining ship Narada. His wife was on the planet Romulus, expecting their first child, when a star near Romulus began to go supernova and threatened to destroy the planet. Spock agreed to save Romulus by dropping Red Matter into the star, creating a black hole which would consume the supernova. Before Spock could deploy the Red Matter, the supernova destroyed Romulus, but Spock proceeded with the plan and destroyed the star.Shortly after this, Nero's ship the Narada hailed Spock. However, before they could intercept him, both ships were sucked into the black hole.Nero and his crew ended up being sent (unknowingly) back 154 years into an alternate reality. Encountering a Federation Starship (the USS Kelvin), Nero used the Narada's advanced weaponry to severely wound the ship, and demanding an audience with the Kelvin's Captain. Inquiring as to the whereabouts of Ambassador Spock, his ship, and the current star date. The revelation that he had been plunged back in time caused Nero to angrily kill the Kelvin's Captain, and destroy the Kelvin (on which future Captain James T. Kirk's father perished).Shortly after the destruction of the Kelvin, the Narada was intercepted by Klingons. Nero and his crew were taken to a Klingon prison planet. During his time there, Nero continued his quest for revenge, plotting and figuring where Spock would reappear. After some time, his captors interrogated him, and confiscated his notes. Realizing he was from the future, and could tell them much about advanced alien weaponry, the Klingon guards demanded to know Nero's future secrets. He instead ended up killing his captors, and releasing his crew. After reboarding the Narada, the massive ship took out additional Klingon warbirds that attempted to stop Nero and his crew from escaping.Nero grew more and more maddened that Spock was to blame for the destruction of Romulus. Finally, 25 years after the Narada emerged from the black hole, Spock emerged through the same black hole and was captured by Nero. Spock tried to explain to Nero what had really happened, but Nero refused to believe this, blaming Spock for the death of his wife, unborn child, and planet.Instead of killing him, Nero spared Spock's life. Nero had the Red Matter device aboard Spock's ship altered to operate on the Narada. The Narada then headed towards Vulcan, where the ship's drill was used to drill a hole into the center of the planet. As this was being done, Spock was beamed down to Vulcan's moon, Delta Vega, to witness the destruction of Vulcan using Red Matter so that Spock would share the pain that Nero feels regarding the destruction of his homeworld.Vulcan sent a distress signal to Starfleet, and 7 ships were dispatched (due to a technical issue upon launch, the USS Enterprise was late arriving to Vulcan). Upon their arrival, the Narada's advanced weaponry destroyed all 6 of the ships that arrived. When the Enterprise finally arrived, Nero was prepared to destroy it as well, until he realized who was aboard the ship. Hailing the Enterprise, Nero ordered Captain Christopher Pike to board the Narada. Pike complied and was captured upon boarding the ship.Once Vulcan had been destroyed, Nero and his crew warped to Earth with Captain Pike aboard. After Nero explained his actions for destroying Starfleet's 6 ships and Vulcan (an act that Pike calls genocide), Nero claims that his actions have 'prevented genocide.' Nero then goes on to explain his intentions: in order to prevent the destruction of his homeworld, he plans to destroy all Federation planets, feeling this is the only way to prevent this reality's version of his family from dying (though Nero's reasoning is flawed, as he does not take into account that Romulus will still be destroyed by the star going supernova - most likely proving that he has lost some of his sanity to the death of his family and homeworld). His next intended target is Earth. Nero then tortures Pike for the access codes to Earth's defenses.Upon obtaining the codes, the Narada maneuvered over the Earth, preparing to drill into the planet. During this time, James T. Kirk and Spock beamed aboard the ship. Once their whereabouts were made known, Nero went to intercept them. Finding only Kirk, Nero attempted to kill him, but was sidetracked when word came that Spock had stolen future Spock 's ship, and destroyed the drilling machine.Driven mad with the fact that the Vulcan seemed to have ruined him a second time, Nero ordered that future Spock 's ship be destroyed, even though the Red Matter aboard it posed a serious threat. Nero was unable to stop the ship from going to warp, and the Narada followed it. Upon catching up to the ship, Spock attempted to collide it into the Narada, igniting the Red Matter to destroy the ship. Nero ordered his crew to 'fire everything,' but was unable to stop Spock's ship, as the Enterprise appeared, destroying the Narada's missiles, thus allowing Spock's ship to colllide.Upon the collision, the Red Matter aboard the ship ignited causing a black hole to appear in the center of the Narada, causing it to implode into both sides of the black hole. In his final moments, Nero was hailed by James T. Kirk and Spock aboard the Enterprise, with an offer to save Nero and his crew. Nero refused, claiming he would rather die than take assistance from them. The Enterprise commenced to firing on the remains of the Narada, as it was torn apart by the black hole. Nero calmly accepted his death and was drawn into the black hole.
